The Summer Solstice, also known as the estival solstice, occurs during summer when one of Earth's poles reaches its maximum tilt toward from the Sun. For the Southern Hemisphere, the Summer Solstice represents the longest period of daylight and shortest night of the year, and when the sun is at its highest position in the sky.
From 21 December, every day becomes a little shorter (and cooler) as the Southern Hemisphere draws closer to its Winter Solstice.
