Naturopathic Philosophy & Principles

Naturopathy is a natural and holistic approach to healthcare that emphasises the body's innate ability to heal itself from within.

This healing philosophy focuses on treating the root causes of illness and imbalances rather than merely addressing superficial symptoms.

By taking into account the individual's unique lifestyle, diet, and emotional status, naturopathy aims to foster optimal wellness and a balanced state of being.

While specific principles may vary among practitioners, six common principles of naturopathy include:

  1. The healing power of nature: Naturopathy recognises the body's inherent ability to heal itself and seeks to support and facilitate this natural healing process. Practitioners aim to remove obstacles to healing and stimulate the body's self-healing mechanisms using natural therapies and interventions.

  2. Identify and treat the root cause: Naturopathic practitioners focus on identifying and addressing the underlying causes of illness, rather than simply managing or suppressing symptoms. By treating the root cause of disease, rather than just the symptoms, naturopathy aims to promote long-term health and wellness.

  3. Treat the whole person: Naturopathy takes into account the inter-connectedness of the body, mind, and spirit in health and illness. Practitioners consider each individual as a whole person, addressing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of health to promote holistic well-being.

  4. First, do no harm: Naturopathic medicine emphasises the use of safe and non-invasive therapies to minimise the risk of harmful side effects. Practitioners prioritise gentle and natural approaches to healing and aim to avoid treatments that may cause harm or further imbalance.

  5. Doctor as teacher: Naturopathic practitioners serve as educators and guides, empowering clients to take an active role in their health and wellness journey. Through education, counselling, and support, practitioners help clients make informed decisions about their health and lifestyle choices.

  6. Prevention is the best cure: Naturopathy emphasises the importance of preventive healthcare measures to maintain optimal health and prevent disease. By promoting healthy lifestyle habits, addressing risk factors, and supporting the body's natural defences, naturopathic medicine aims to prevent illness before it occurs.

These principles guide naturopathic practitioners in providing personalised and client-centred care that addresses the individual needs and goals of each client, promoting holistic health and optimal vitality.

Therapeutic Order

The Naturopathic Therapeutic Order is a comprehensive framework that effectively guides naturopathic practitioners in thoughtfully developing individualised treatment plans and strategically prioritising interventions to support the body's innate and natural healing processes.

This approach ensures that each aspect of health is addressed holistically, promoting optimal health and vitality.

While specific approaches may vary among practitioners, the general principles of the Naturopathic Therapeutic Order include:

  • Identify and remove obstacles to health: The first step in naturopathic treatment is to identify and address any factors that may be hindering the body's ability to heal. This may include lifestyle factors such as poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, environmental toxins, or underlying imbalances in the body.

  • Stimulate the healing power of nature: Naturopathic practitioners use natural therapies and interventions to support and enhance the body's innate healing abilities. This may include dietary modifications, herbal medicine, nutritional supplements, hydrotherapy, physical medicine, and mind-body techniques such as meditation or counselling.

  • Tonify weakened or damaged systems: Naturopathic treatment aims to support and strengthen weakened or compromised systems in the body. This may involve addressing deficiencies in nutrients, supporting detoxification pathways, balancing hormones, or addressing imbalances in the nervous system or immune system.

  • Correct structural integrity: Naturopathic medicine recognises the importance of structural integrity in overall health and wellness. Practitioners may use physical medicine techniques such as chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, or therapeutic exercise to address musculoskeletal imbalances and promote optimal function.

  • Address energetic balance: Naturopathic practitioners consider the energetic aspects of health and wellness, including the flow of vital energy or life force (known as qi or prana) throughout the body. Techniques such as acupuncture, acupressure, or energy healing modalities may be used to restore balance and promote healing.

  • Address mind-body-spirit connection: Naturopathic medicine recognises the inter-connectedness of the body, mind, and spirit in health and illness. Practitioners may use mind-body techniques such as counselling, meditation, mindfulness, or stress reduction techniques to address emotional imbalances and promote overall well-being.

  • Support the individual's journey towards wellness: Naturopathic practitioners work collaboratively with clients to develop personalised treatment plans that address their unique needs, preferences, and goals. Clients are empowered to take an active role in their health and wellness journey, with the support and guidance of their naturopathic practitioner.

By following the Naturopathic Therapeutic Order, naturopathic practitioners aim to address the underlying causes of illness, support the body's natural healing processes, and promote holistic health and wellness. This approach emphasises client-centred care, personalised treatment plans, and a focus on addressing the root cause of disease to support long-term health and optimal vitality.

Process of Disease and Healing

In the fascinating realm of naturopathic philosophy, the progression from optimal health and vibrant vitality to the onset of disease follows a carefully articulated sequence, often referred to as the ‘Process of Disease and Healing’.

This insightful framework outlines the various stages of imbalance that can lead to health issues and subsequently illustrates the restorative health journey back to optimal vitality and well-being.

The process of disease and healing involves the below stages:

  1. Optimal health: Optimal health and vitality is characterised by a state of balance and harmony within the body, where all systems are functioning optimally, and the individual experiences vitality, resilience, and well-being.

  2. Disturbance of function: The first stage of imbalance occurs when there is a disturbance or disruption in the body's normal functioning. This may result from various factors such as poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, toxins, or other environmental influences.

  3. Reaction: In response to the disturbance of function, the body initiates a series of adaptive responses to restore balance and promote healing. These reactions may manifest as symptoms such as fatigue, pain, inflammation, or changes in mood or energy levels.

  4. Chronic reaction: If the underlying cause of the disturbance is not addressed, the body's adaptive responses may become chronic or persistent, leading to the development of ongoing symptoms or chronic health conditions.

  5. Degeneration: Over time, prolonged imbalance and unresolved chronic reactions can lead to degeneration or deterioration of tissues, organs, or systems within the body. This may result in the progression of disease and the development of more serious health conditions.

  6. Discharge Process: The discharge process involves the body's efforts to eliminate accumulated toxins, waste products, or diseased tissue through various detoxification mechanisms such as sweating, urination, bowel movements, or skin eruptions.

  7. Restoration of function: The final stage of the healing process involves restoring function and promoting healing by addressing the underlying causes of imbalance, supporting the body's natural healing mechanisms, and promoting overall health and well-being.

Throughout this process, various factors can contribute to the disturbance of function and progression of disease, including lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, sleep, stress, environmental toxins, genetic predispositions, and emotional well-being.

Naturopathic medicine aims to address these factors holistically and support the body's innate ability to heal itself, promoting optimal health and well-being. By identifying and addressing the root causes of imbalance, supporting the body's natural healing mechanisms, and promoting healthy lifestyle habits, naturopathic practitioners help individuals achieve and maintain optimal health and vitality.

Directions of Healing

Naturopathic ‘Directions of Healing,’ or Hering's Law of Cure (named after Constantine Hering, a prominent homeopathic physician born on 1 January 1800), is a guiding principle in complementary medicine that outlines the x process during treatment.

The Law of Cure states that healing occurs in a specific order, progressing from top to bottom, inside to outside, and from more vital to less vital organs. Symptoms may also reappear or shift as the body cleanses and restores balance.

The Law of Cure includes several key principles:

  • Healing from above to below (top down / head to toe): The law suggests that healing or cure will move in the body from above to below, or from the top down. This means that a presenting symptom or a condition may move vertically down in the body, in the direction of the head to the toes. A simple example would be a chronic rash on the chest that moves down, for example, to the groin area, and eventually to the legs. When it resolves, it will do so in its original area(s) first, as it moves inferiorly. Another example of a potential sign or symptom of the first direction of healing would be arthritic pain moving down from the neck to the fingers.

  • Healing from within to without (internal to external / outward): Hering’s law suggests that the body's innate healing process begins with the restoration of internal organs and systems before manifesting outwardly in the form of symptoms on the skin or in peripheral organs.

  • Moving from more important to less important organs: The Law of Cure suggests that healing progresses from vital organs, such as the brain, heart, and lungs, to less vital organs and tissues. Symptoms may move from more critical organs to less critical ones as the body's overall health improves.

  • Reversal of symptom presentation (newest to oldest symptoms): As the body undergoes healing, symptoms may initially intensify or shift in character before gradually improving. This phenomenon is often referred to as a "healing crisis" or "naturopathic aggravation" and is considered a positive sign that the body is responding to treatment.

  • Mental and emotional healing: The Law of Cure acknowledges the inter-connectedness of physical, mental, and emotional health. It suggests that as physical symptoms improve, there may be corresponding improvements in mental and emotional well-being.

While Hering's Law of Cure is often observed in the practice of naturopathy and homeopathy, it is important to note that not all healing processes follow this exact pattern. Additionally, symptoms may vary widely among individuals, and the healing process can be influenced by various factors, including the nature of the illness, the individual's overall health, the effectiveness of treatment, and other external factors.

Overall, the Law of Cure provides a framework for understanding the dynamic nature of the healing process and helps naturopathic practitioners assess the progress of treatment and adjust remedies accordingly.
