Paleo Diet

The paleo diet, also known as the Paleolithic diet or “caveman diet”, is a dietary approach that seeks to emulate the eating patterns of our ancient ancestors from the Paleolithic era. The core premise of the paleo diet is to consume foods that would have been available to early humans during the Paleolithic period, before the advent of agriculture and modern food processing methods.

Characteristics of the paleo diet include:

  1. Emphasis on whole foods: The paleo diet focuses on consuming whole, unprocessed foods that are minimally refined and free from additives and artificial ingredients.

  2. High in protein: The paleo diet typically includes a higher intake of protein from animal sources, such as meat, poultry, fish, and eggs. Plant-based protein sources such as nuts, seeds, and legumes are also allowed but may be limited by some interpretations of the diet.

  3. Fruits and vegetables: The paleo diet encourages the consumption of a variety of fruits and vegetables, which provide essential vitamins, minerals, phyto-nutrients, anti-oxidants and fibre.

  4. Healthy fats: Healthy fats from sources such as oily fish, nuts, seeds, avocados, and olive oil are staples of the paleo diet. Processed vegetable oils, margarine, and trans-fats are typically avoided.

  5. Limited grains and legumes: Grains such as wheat, rice, and corn, as well as legumes such as beans, lentils, and peanuts, are restricted or eliminated on the paleo diet due to their relatively recent introduction to the human diet and potential anti-nutrient content. As such, a paleo diet can be considered low in gluten.

  6. Dairy-free: The paleo diet excludes dairy products, including milk, cheese, yogurt, and butter. Some interpretations of the diet allow for small amounts of grass-fed butter or ghee.

  7. No processed foods: Processed foods, refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, and other highly processed ingredients are avoided on the paleo diet.

Paleo Foods

Potential health benefits attributed to the paleo diet:

  • Weight loss: The emphasis on whole, nutrient-dense foods and the exclusion of processed foods and added sugars may support weight loss and weight management.

  • Improved blood-glucose control: Some research suggests that the paleo diet may help improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control, which could benefit individuals with type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.

  • Reduced inflammation: Processed and highly refined foods, including sugar in the diet is understood to cause an inflammatory response in the body. By eliminating these foods and instead focusing on whole foods, the paleo diet may help reduce inflammation in the body, which is associated with various chronic diseases.

  • Increased nutrient intake: The paleo diet encourages the consumption of nutrient-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and healthy fats, which contribute to overall health and vitality.

However, the paleo diet is not recommended to everyone. It is important to consider potential drawbacks and limitations of the paleo diet:

  • Nutrient deficiencies: Excluding entire food groups such as grains and legumes may lead to deficiencies in certain vitamins, minerals, and fibre. To ensure a balanced diet of nutrients, careful planning is required.

  • Social and practical challenges: Following the paleo diet may be challenging in social situations, dining out, or when traveling, as many modern foods and food products are not paleo-friendly.

  • Individual variability: The paleo is not suitable for everyone, and individual responses to the diet can vary. Some people may thrive on a paleo-style eating pattern, while others may not experience the same benefits or may find it too restrictive.
