Pancake Day, also known as ‘Shrove Tuesday’ is a dedicated day to enjoy pancakes.
Shrove Tuesday, observed in Christian faith is the first day of lent. The end of lent is of course Easter. As the date of Easter is determined by the arrival of the first full moon after the Autumn Equinox (Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere), the date of Easter and therefore the date of Shrove Tuesday changes each year. Shrove Tuesday / Pancake Day can be between 3 February and 9 March inclusive.
Historically, fatty foods were avoided for 40 days during lent so Christian’s would make pancakes to use up the fatty foods stored in their pantries such as oil, eggs and full-cream milk. Add flour to these ingredients and Voila! You have pancakes.
Be careful when you flip the pancakes! Enjoy.
